Joyful movement, body control, and martial arts skills through play.
Junior aikido groups meet three times a week at the Tampere dojo. Youth from around age 12, or when technical training becomes interesting, train in their own group so that training is meaningful for everyone and teaching can be planned with the age group in mind.
In junior aikido, the focus is on joyful movement, development of body control and basic motor skills (coordination, balance, agility, and strength), as well as general martial arts skills:
These skills are learned through games and play. Especially in the 8–10 year old groups, learning happens through play, but in all junior and youth groups, play and gamification are an essential part of teaching.
Aikido techniques, grappling techniques, and striking/kicking exercises are performed appropriately for the age group. Ukemi (safely receiving techniques) is practiced comprehensively in all age groups from the very beginning.
Focus on developing basic motor skills. Games and play lead towards martial arts techniques and aikido training.
Practice martial arts skills through games and play. Technical training becomes more goal-oriented.
When technical training becomes interesting, youth move to their own group or join adult classes.
Individual progress tracking and encouragement happens through star techniques. Performance is recorded as a 1–3 star achievement in the OmaDojo app when the technique is demonstrated to an instructor. Students and parents can easily track progress through the app.
Highlighted times are sessions for this group.
